Genital Warts During Pregnancy

HPV or human papilloma virus is highly contagious. According to studies, pregnant women who are infected with HPV run the risk of transmitting the virus to the unborn child. This means that, if a pregnant woman is suffering from genital warts, chances are, the baby may also have genital warts. That is why it is important that pregnant women with such condition seek treatment before the baby is born. To state the obvious, pregnancy is a very delicate situation. Needless to say, the presence of genital warts during pregnancy may lead to many health problems for both the mother and the baby. Pregnancy already brings a number of discomforts that women have to deal with. Genital warts drastically add to the discomforts by making urinating difficult and painful. Because of the hormonal changes a woman experiences during pregnancy, the warts multiply in number, enlarge and bleed. There are people who feel embarrassed to talk to a doctor about genital warts and try to treat themselves with non-prescription medication instead. These people run a 50-50 chance of being cured or aggravating their suffering. For pregnant women, taking that chance is not an option. The best way to battle genital warts for them is to talk to their obstetrician-gynecologist of whatever treatment options there are that would not endanger her and her baby.
